To celebrate it’s 11th year, the local festival introduces a number of green initiatives designed to conserve, support and enlighten. Festival goers who carpooled, used mass transit, biked or walked to the BMFF can sign up at a large “Go Green” poster board and be eligible to win a Mountain Hardwear sleeping bag or a pair of Leki hiking poles. Green raffles will take place each night: Friday’s will benefit Cuyahoga Valley National Park Association’s maintenance of the Towpath Trail and Saturday’s will benefit City Fresh, a program that develops neighborhood food centers. A literature table at the event will include free magazines, brochures and flyers devoted to recycling and Earth Day events.
In addition to the usual fare of adventure and extreme sport films, the 2008 line-up includes inspiring environmental films, such as Searching for the Coast Wolves, the story of an ex-world champion cross-country skier who devotes six years to the scientific study of the mysterious coast wolves in the wilds, Trial & Error, about mountain biking in the coastal mountains of British Columbia that are slated for clearcut logging and Badgered, an animated short that won “Best Film on Mountain Environment.”
The festival features a reception each evening and showcases different films both nights. Friday’s Opening Night Reception includes appetizers, beer and dessert. Appetizers are also served Saturday and on tap for both nightly receptions are complimentary Red Bull and Caribou Coffee in addition to exhibits for outdoor enthusiasts from 6:00-7:30 p.m.
